Sample Maps
We've included samples of three types of State and Territorial maps below: the Holt's maps, the US Department of Interior maps and the Transportation/Postal Route maps. The Holt's maps were produced between 1883 and ca.1890. They show the development and settlement of Wyoming and include the location of some early ranches and trails.
The Archives has US Department of Interior State maps from 1876 to 1947. They are extremely detailed, including information as diverse as the location of US land offices, Indian and Military Reservations, forest and bird reserves, etc.
The Transportation/Postal Route maps vary greatly depending on the reason they were produced. Many of the early Postal Route maps don't even show roads or trails, but include the amount of time to travel from one stop to the next. Later Transportation maps include bus routes, airport locations, etc.

L.C. Bishop Trail Maps
After LC Bishop retired as Wyoming State Engineer in 1957, he expressed concern regarding the marking of historic trails and sites in Wyoming. The Wyoming State Legislature appropriated money for him to survey historic sites. As a result, Bishop produced 11 maps featuring forts, trails and roads. This map series was filed with the Wyoming State Archives & Historical Department. Some of Bishop's maps were also used in Annals of Wyoming, a periodical published by the Wyoming State Historical Society. The Wyoming State Archives scanned copies of the 11 maps and have given the Wyoming State Historical Society permission to use them on their web page.
